The high school’s Science Olympiad team placed 25th overall (out of 46 competing high schools) in the New York State Science Olympiad regional competition on Feb. 8 at Ward Melville High School. Demonstrating the strength of Deer Park’s STEM curriculum, two of Deer Park’s two-person teams medaled. The Circuit Lab team of Andreas Stamatakis and Aaron Zhang earned second place, while the Geologic Mapping team of Nicholas Martino and Zhang came in sixth place.

“It was a great day, and it was really nice to see all of our team members trying their best and having a good time applying their scientific knowledge and skills,” said Science Olympiad adviser David Knuffke. “I’m very proud of everyone on the team.”

Continuing their quest for science excellence, four Deer Park students – David Golann, Ian Murray, Nicole-Ann Pagan and John Pawelko – will compete in the Stony Brook University Protein Modeling Challenge on Feb. 28. In the competition, hosted by Stony Brook’s Center for Science and Mathematics Education, the team will display their model of a Ras protein, constructed prior to the event. They will then compete on-site to build another protein model and take an exam about protein structure and function.
