At the high school’s annual Senior Awards ceremony, 126 high-achieving members of the Class of 2014 were honored for their academic, athletic and civic accomplishments. The 249 awards given to the students included both school- and community-oriented awards. In some instances, students were required to write essays explaining why they would be the best candidates to receive certain scholarships, while other awards were based on academic performance or community service hours, or were selected by a committee of teachers, counselors and administrators from the high school.

“This ceremony is an opportunity for teachers, administrators, local politicians and community members to honor these students for all their hard work and dedication throughout their high school years,” said Associate Principal Jeanne Kozlowsky. “As a result of their commitment to their studies, athletic teams, extracurricular activities and community, they have made this high school a better place.”

After the Pledge of Allegiance, led by Student Council Vice President Arianna Leo, and a stirring, soulful rendition of “The Star-Spangled Banner,” sung by Jerline Aristide, the night of celebration swung into high gear, with student honorees cheered on by a proud audience of family, friends, administrators, teachers and members of the Board of Education.

Deer Park’s jazz ensemble, led by director Jerry Cannarozzo, entertained the assembled community in the auditorium with several numbers before the ceremony and during the intermission, including “Tiger of San Pedro.”
