A trio of Deer Park High School student-athletes signed National Letters of Intent in November to continue their playing careers while attending college next fall. They were congratulated during the signing ceremony by Deer Park Athletic Director Dominick Fontana as well as their proud families.
Lacrosse midfielder Lauren Gentile, a Scholar-Athlete, honor student and four-year member of the varsity team, will play for Queens College. “Between the athletics and academics, this gives me the chance to get everything I want out of a school,” she said.
Hailey Leitch, a fellow Scholar-Athlete and honor student, has played attack for the varsity lacrosse team since eighth grade. She will play for the Setters at Pace University, where she plans to major in nursing. She cited the beautiful campus in Pleasantville, N.Y. and the strength of Pace’s nursing program as the reasons for her choice.
Softball team captain Ali Wiener signed with Dowling College, where she will study special education. The second baseman, a member of the varsity team at Deer Park for four years, liked the fact that Dowling, with a main campus in Oakdale and a sports complex in Shirley, was close to home.
“I am proud of our three athletes who have worked extremely hard to get
an opportunity to play at the next level,” said Fontana. “I wish them
the best of luck on all their future endeavors.”
