JFK was the site of the American Red Cross’s very first “Pillowcase Project” event on Long Island, hosted by American Red Cross on Long Island CEO John Miller and several of the organization’s volunteer preparedness experts.
Sponsored by Disney, the Pillowcase Project is a preparedness education program for children in grades 3-5, which teaches students about personal and family readiness, local hazards, and basic coping skills in the event of an emergency or natural disaster.
At the May 19 event, a class of third-graders at the school participated in an interactive safety class in advance of hurricane season, which starts on June 1; also covering topics such as disaster maps and fire safety. At the conclusion of the project, the students received individual pillowcases to decorate for their own personal emergency supply kits.
