Three talented Deer Park High School actors came away winners at this year’s Teen Theatre Awards for plays and musicals, presented by the Babylon Citizens Council on the Arts’ Teen Theatre Committee on June 12 at West Babylon High School.
Mauricio Montes, who played Seymour in “Little Shop of Horrors,” won Outstanding Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical; Jessica Orelus, who played Clemma Diggins in “Proposals,” won Outstanding Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Play; and Christina O’Toole, who played Josie in “Proposals,” won Outstanding Actress in a Supporting Role in a Play.
O’Toole was also honored at the annual BACCA ceremony for her work as a student choreographer for “Little Shop of Horrors,” while Deer Park student directors, assistant directors and producers who were recognized included Anthony Anello, Taylor Bianco, Ashley Casella, Samantha Colon, Samantha Connolly, Erica DeLuca, Anthony Henkel, Aneesa Khan, Averi Lacoff, Megan Lipps, Montes, O’Toole, Faria Rahman, Alyssa Soldano and Catherine Taipe.
Among the recipients of this year’s “Teens in Tune” for outstanding small group ensembles were Deer Park’s Olivia Grizzle, Kate Keller and Orelus for their trio vocal performance in “Little Shop of Horrors.”
Other Deer Park students who were nominated for Teen Theatre Awards included Joseph DeNoyior, Henkel, Destiny Parsons and Alec Winters, as well as nominations for the stage crew of the One-Act Play festival and for “Proposals” as Outstanding Play.
During the ceremony, Montes and Parsons represented Deer Park by performing a song from “Little Shop of Horrors.”
