A team of five students from the high school’s Students Against Destructive Decisions club placed first in both the 17th legislative district and Suffolk County for a contest to produce a 30-second public service announcement on the hazards of energy drinks.
For their hard-hitting PSA, students Oluchi Amah, Debbie Baculima, James Depre, Karishma Shah and Stephanie Vaia took on the roles of doctor, police officer, teacher and energy drink consumer. They discussed the negative effects on the human body caused by consuming such drinks, which contain significant quantities of sugar and caffeine.
The winning SADD team and adviser Janet Warner attended a June 16 meeting of the county legislature in Riverhead, where they were presented with a proclamation for their achievement by Legislator Lou D'Amaro, and were also honored at a recent Board of Education meeting.
