Students in Heather Ciurleo’s life skills classes at JFK recently gained experience by taking the Long Island Rail Road from Babylon to Sayville. Many of the students had never been on a train before, but enjoyed purchasing tickets, waiting for the train and meeting a conductor, followed by lunch at a pizzeria after the train arrived in Sayville.
Before the outing, Ciurleo created a social story about what to expect on the train, such as rules and the sights and sounds they might encounter. When the class arrived back at school, the students worked to answer questions about the trip, including what they saw, who they met, what they heard and what they ate for lunch.
