Fully engaged in autumn activities, students in special education teacher Heather Ciurleo’s class at JFK spent several weeks learning about Johnny Appleseed and how he helped the earth, as well as the life cycle of an apple, and made predictions using each of the five senses.
“Together as a class we described our apples, made predictions about how many seeds they might have and discussed why an apple changes colors after being cut,” said Ciurleo.
The students then enjoyed a day of apple picking at Windy Acres Farm in Calverton, and followed a recipe to make apple pie.
