We hope to have some major announcements for the new year in 2008. Check out the rest of the site links and please join us. There is no fee to required to join, just your interest in the open space, forest and historical aspects. There is nothing to lose. Thanks for visiting, come back often and have fun. That's all we ask!The Edgewood Preserve is an 843 acre site, located mainly in Deer Park and Dix Hills. It is owned by New York State and managed by the NYS Dept. of Environmental Conservation. The site is open to the public, but a free NYS DEC permit is required except during our special events. Activities that are approved are hiking, walking, running, road bicycling, mountain bicycling, falconry, geocaching and dog training (seasonal). Model remote-control airplanes are also flown but you must become a member of the Edgewood Flyers. No motorized vehicles of any sort are normally allowed on the property. No ATV's or motorcycles are allowed under any circumstances. The preserve was created in the late 1980's when the state decided a renovation of the old abandoned Edgewood hospital buildings into condominiums was too controversial, and it was decided the entire site would remain undeveloped. We have to thank NYS Senator Owen Johnson for having the vision to create this wonderful preserve and writing the key legislation behind it. It is a rare ecosystem, and we are lucky it is there at all, since the early design plans for the hospital called for a much larger complex that would have wiped out almost all of the wooded area that is now preserved.
2007 was indeed a busy year at the preserve. We held many events, and we hope 2008 will be even better! A quick rundown of events would have to include the three anti-Intermodal rallies held over the summer,
several hikes throughout the preserve and adjacent intermodal site, Two trail work and cleanup days (including Earth Day) of the preserve itself, and our new program to adopt LI Avenue's north side. We also had our first
Edgewood "Open House" in June and we had a great time with all who attended. We'd like your support. To receive regular updates and event notices, please send an e-mail with your name, address, e-mail preferences, and any other info you'd like us to know.

We would like a little help with saving the Commack road footbridge, building more regional trails, saving more forests, helping with the preserve and stopping construction of the TRIM intermodal.
Or, just join us for a hike or walk now and then. No obligations or fees of any sort to join us!
