English as a Second Language (ESL) Past Events



JFK Culture Night


On February 4, 2014, ESL students, teachers and families, celebrated culture by participating in a Holidays Around The World event. Students visited tables to learn about holiday celebrations from around the world. Students sampled special treats associated with the various holidays, while creating holiday crafts specific to each of the celebrations. It was a fun family night for all.





Chinese New Year

Chinese New Year for the 2013-2014 school year will be celebrated on January 31, 2014. This year is a special New Year, as we celebrate the year of the Snake. The Snake brings wisdom and beauty to all.




Special Report JFK


Students in Ms. Megan Meahan's ESL class, are investigating animals of the world for a special report. Using interactive graphic organizers , students research and prepare for their upcoming project presentations.

Making Connections: JQA


Students in Mrs. Grossman's ESL class are making language connections by reading favorite folk tales. Students have the opportunity to bring bilingual storybooks home for their parents to read to them in their native language and English. Reading is truly fun!

NYSESLAT News


The NYSESLAT 2014, will be administered as follows:


All speaking task portions of the 2014 NYSESLAT will be administered in grades K-12 beginning April 9, 2014. The reading, writing and listening portions of the 2014 NYSESLAT will be administered in all buildings K-12, from May 5th to May 15th 2014. All students enrolled in the English as a Second Language (ESL) program, must take this state assessment.




My Fall Haiku: Robert Frost


Students in Ms. Freire's class prepared and presented autumn poems: My Fall Haiku, using Smart Board technology. A Haiku is a three-lined poem with specific syllables for each of the poem lines. As you can see by the smiling faces, all presentations were a great success!





Foster Grandparent Program


National Volunteer Month is celebrated each year during the month of April. National Volunteer Month presents an opportunity for individuals to celebrate ordinary people who accomplish extraordinary things through service.


With the help of the Federation of Organizations, the Deer Park School District has been fortunate to welcome "Grandparents" into our May Moore, Lincoln, JFK and JQA schools. "Grandparents" are part of the Foster Grandparent Program. This program gives seniors in our community the opportunity to work one-on-one with children, by providing individualized attention, encouragement and literacy support.




ESL Family Fun Night


All students participating in our program, are invited to attend this year's "fun night", which will be held on Thursday, May 29, 2014 from 5:30-7:30pm, at the Deer Park High School Aquatic Center. Family and friends are also welcome to attend.
