Three patriotic Deer Park students – JFK fifth-grader Steven Mendell, Frost sixth-grader Damian Ellner and high school sophomore Badar Zaman – were recognized as winners of the Deer Park Volunteer Fire Department’s 9/11 Essay Contest.

Mendell’s essay discussed the ways that numerous people in the community came together to help each during the crisis on Sept. 11, 2001. Ellner and Zaman both wrote about the importance of remembering those who lost their lives on 9/11. “I talked about how they made the ultimate sacrifice,” said Ellner.

Each of the three students was awarded a certificate and gift card at the fire department’s annual 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony, held on Sept. 12. They were also recognized at the Sept. 29 Board of Education meeting, where they were lauded by the Board and presented with certificates by Superintendent of Schools Eva J. Demyen.
