DPHS Students Experience South Asian Culture at Deepavali Festival

Members of Deer Park High School’s South Asian Cultural Club recently attended the 39th annual Deepavali Festival at Overlook Beach in Babylon, joining thousands of visitors for a day celebrating Indian culture, traditions and community.
Led by club adviser and social studies teacher Michael Chin, students experienced a wide range of cultural activities, including traditional Indian dance and music performances, food and shopping vendors, family activities and a fireworks finale over the ocean. The festival, presented by the Association of Indians in America-New York, drew more than 10,000 attendees and highlighted the Festival of Lights through music, dance, art, food and community celebration.
“We participated in this field trip because we wanted to give our club members the opportunity to experience and celebrate South Asian culture firsthand,” SACC President Feeha Hossain said. “As president, I was excited to bring our club together for an event that allowed us to learn, connect with our roots and appreciate the traditions that make our culture special.”
