Video Conferencing in French, Spanish and Italian with JQA:


High School Italian, Spanish and French 12 language students shared a lesson in Spanish, Italian and French with Ms. Vadala, Ms. Smith, Ms. Sullivan and Ms. SantaMaria's grade 2 students. The high school language students video conferenced by using Skype,with the JQA second grade classes. Students were introduced to colors, songs and expressions using the target language. Next, the students will visit JQA to meet their LOTE buddies during National Foreign Language Week. This celebration will take place in early March.
Now We're Cooking...

Ms. Mendiolaza's Spanish 10 language students sampled Spanish cuisine, as they prepared authentic regional dishes. Students were provided a cooking lesson, planned menus and worked together to design the perfect Spanish meal. The final product was enjoyed by all.
Spanish Language Students on Broadway...

Ms. Mendiolaza's grade 10 Spanish language students enjoyed a special event on Broadway. Students visited NYC to see the bilingual production of West Side Story. The grade 10 students had a wonderful Broadway experience.
World Language Honor Society Holiday Party
Student members of the French, Italian and Spanish Honor Societies, hosted a holiday celebration for community children, families and friends on Wednesday, December 22, 2010. Food, music, songs, skits and crafts were enjoyed by all in attendance. Santa and the Three Kings made a special visit to this year's event.
National French Week:

The purpose of National French Week is to increase our community's understanding and appreciation of the francophone world. It is interesting to see how the French language and culture has influenced our lives. There dozens of countries and millions of people who speak this beautiful language. The week long celebration is organized by the (AATF) , American Association of Teachers of French. It is an annual celebration of French language and francophone cultures.
NATIONAL FRENCH WEEK/ LA SEMAINE DU FRANÇAIS 2010
Our French students celebrated National French Week, from Nov. 3th through Nov. 10th. This year, grade 8 students sampled French cuisine and experieneced some traditional dishes at Voila: The Bistro. In addition, our grade 7 students enjoyed a tour of the Bon Bons Chocolate Shop, where they learned the art of chocolate making. Naturally, delicious samples of the final product were available to all students.
October is Italian American Heritage Month

Each year the U.S. president signs an executive order designating the month of October as National Italian American Heritage Month. Coinciding with the festivities surrounding Columbus Day, the proclamation is recognition of the many achievements, contributions, and successes of Americans of Italian heritage as well as Italians in America.
Over 5.4 million Italians immigrated to the United States between 1820 and 1992. Today there are over 26 million Americans of Italian heritage in the United States, making them the fifth largest ethnic group. The country was even named after an Italian, the explorer and geographer Amerigo Vespucci.

Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month!
September 15 to October 15
In 1968, President Lyndon B. Johnson obtained authorization from Congress to proclaim a week in September as National Hispanic Heritage Week. In 1988, the observance was expanded by President Ronald Reagan to a month-long commemoration, beginning September 15 and ending October 15. During this month, America celebrates the culture and traditions of U.S. residents who trace their roots to Spain, Mexico and Spanish-speaking nations in Central America, South America and the Caribbean.
MIDTERM EXAMINATIONS JANUARY 2011
The following exams will be given as in-class examinations in January 2011, prior to the Uniform Midterm/Regents Exam week:
All grade 9, 10, 12 and Spanish I exams.
Listening Tasks: 1/12 & 1/13
Writing Tasks: 1/18 & 1/19
Reading Comprehension Tasks: 1/20 & 1/21
All Speaking Tasks for all Midterm Exams, will be completed in class by 1/10/11.
Grade 11 Language Midterms:
These exams will be adminstered during testing week. All grade 11 midterms will be administered on the morning of January 26, 2011 at 8am. Only the listening portion of this exam will be completed in class, prior to testing week.
Regents Exams 2011
The Comprehensive Regents Exam in Spanish will be given on January 26, 2011 at 8am in the morning. This exam will be administered to students who need to retake the June 2010 Regents examination or for those who are seeking credit by examination.
The NYS Regents Exam in French, Italian and Spanish, will be administered in June 2011.
These NYS assessments are 3 hour exams.
Final Exams/SLP 2011
All grades 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 and 12 World Language final exams/SLP, will be administered during testing week in June. All final exams include assessments in the areas of: speaking, listening, reading comprehension and writing.
At Deer Park High School, final exams will be given as follows: Grade 12 exams will be administered the week of June 6th as in-class examinations. All grade 9, 10 and Spanish I classes will test as follows: Listening Comprehension June 1st, Writing Comprehension June 2nd, Reading and Writing sections will be adminsitered on June 8th, 9th and 10th with make ups on June 13th. All World Language textbooks will be collected by June 10th.
Department Events:
Grade 6 Poster Contest Tea
Grade 6 students will compete in our World Language Poster Contest during National Foreign Language Week in March 2011. Students will create posters and be judged by theme and category. Poster categories will range from Best Computer Generated to Most Artistic. A tea for all student winners was held after school at the Robert Frost Middle School on Wednesday, May 11, 2011.
Spanish Dinner at Robert Frost
Our Spanish language students will host an evening of music, dance and delicious cuisine on April 1, 2011. Ms. Blum and Ms. Peragine, Spanish teachers at the middle school will organize this year's event.
French Dinner at Robert Frost
Our French language students will prepare and serve delicious French cuisine during our 11th Annual French Dinner which will take place on April 29, 2011. Students from grades 6-12 will participate and prepare meals for this event. Ms. Nancy Wolman and Ms. Susan Bollag, French teachers at the middle and high school will organize this year's dinner.
Language Exploration Day 2011
High school senior language students will visite May Moore and John Quincy Adams to promote language learning during National Foreign Language Week. The high school students will prepare lessons for their elementary friends, which will include: songs, activities and games in Spanish, Italian and French.
International Culture Fair, March 4, 2011

The ICC will hold an International Fair in the high school cafeteria on Friday, March 4, 2011 at 7pm. The evening will be fun-filled with music and food. Come out an learn a new dance too, as club members promote language and culture.
World Language Video Conferencing

High school senior language students will video conference with the elementary schools during the month of February. During National Foreign Language Week, high school students will have the opportunity to visit their "broadcast buddies" in person, at both May Moore and JQA, to celebrate Language Exploration Day.
National Foreign Language Week 2011
On March 7, 2011, school districts throughout the United States will begin celebrating National Foreign Language Week. This recognized week long celebration, highlights the importance of language and culture in our world. Students in our district will be involved in a variety of language learning activites during the month of March.
