Square Dancing Comes to JFK

Square Dancing Comes to JFK thumbnail255400

In 2021, physical education teachers approached Principal Kelly Benson with an idea to bring square dancing to John F. Kennedy Intermediate School. Since then, retired physical education teacher and Deer Park track coach Mario Fiore was brought in to help teach square dancing. Fifth grade students participated in three PE classes in which they were taught dances like the Alley Cat, Patty Cake Polka and the Virginia Reel. They also learned traditional square dancing, called by Fiore. The lessons culminated with a Square Dance Night, sponsored by the PFC. Students brought a special adult to dance with and competed for the Best Dressed Duo Award.
