High school students had the unique opportunity to meet with Holocaust survivor Al Munzer on May 27 via Zoom.

Munzer, who works with the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, DC, shared his experiences with the students in a half-hour presentation, accompanied by visuals. He described being born in 1941, put into hiding, and growing up with an Indonesian family during the Nazi regime. He also delved into the murder of his two sisters after three days at Auschwitz as well as his eventual liberation and reunion with his birth mother.

Following the presentation, the students were able to ask their own questions for an additional 30 minutes, which included “How do you feel about the Germans today?”; “Do you have survivor’s guilt and if so, how do you cope?” and “We are learning about other genocides, like in Rwanda and Cambodia, have you had the opportunity to connect with any other genocide survivors?”
